The Cold Moon & Full Moon in December: History and Rituals

The cold moon can be a time to reflect on what we want to bring into our lives in the coming year and set some intentions for the New Year.

The full moon in December is traditionally known as the cold moon.

This name likely comes from the fact that this is typically one of the colder months of the year. The cold moon has also been associated with winter, frost, and ice.

December full moons are often celebrated in midwinter festivals and pagan rituals. The full moon brings light to the darkest time of year, which is why it has been associated with cycles of death and rebirth since ancient times. December full moons are also commonly used for divination work because they offer insight into the future.

December full moons are also associated with the astrological sign of Sagittarius. This full moon is sometimes referred to as a "cold full moon" because it takes place during winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere when temperatures tend to be cooler than average for this time of year.

This full moon has long been seen as a time for magic and ritual work-related explicitly to banishing and protection.

When we feel the cold of winter, it is easy to want warmth and safety. In December, the full moon reminds us that we can draw power from within ourselves for strength and comfort even when times get tough.

The most famous ritual work around December full moons is celebrating solstice celebrations by lighting candles on a Yule log or placing lit candles in windows to symbolize the sun's return after its winter absence.

As many will celebrate Yule during this time, there are also rituals around welcoming back the sun and celebrating the rebirth of light.

The cold moon can be a time to reflect on what we want to bring into our lives in the coming year and set some intentions for the New Year.

Some pagan traditions celebrate the full moon is a time to honor the ancestors and deceased loved ones. This can be done by setting out food and drinks for them or placing photos or other mementos near a lit candle. Remembering those who have passed on is one way to honor their memory and keep their spirit alive.

Whatever your tradition may be, take some time to connect with the power of the full moon in December and let it guide you through these colder months.
